Ecuadorian Police Arrest Two Suspects in Soccer Player Mario Pineida’s Killing
Ecuadorian police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of soccer player Mario Pineida, who was shot and killed in an attack that also took the life of his partner and wounded his mother. The incident has highlighted the rising violence in the Andean nation, where Pineida was a well-known figure in the soccer community.
The 33-year-old Barcelona de Guayaquil defender and former national soccer team player was shot on Wednesday in the northern neighborhood of Samanes, in the coastal city of Guayaquil. The attack has sent shockwaves through the Latin American soccer community, with clubs and fans mourning the loss of the talented player.
Investigation and Arrests
Ecuador’s prosecutor’s office announced on Friday that suspects Cristian P.G. and Jimnery P.B. appeared before a judge, who ordered their preventive arrests based on sufficient evidence and the risk of them fleeing from justice. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the motives behind the attack.

Security camera footage from the scene shows Pineida and his partner leaving a butcher shop and being shot by two men, one wearing a motorcycle helmet and the other a cap. The identities of the suspects and the motives behind the attack are still under investigation.
Rising Violence in Ecuador
The killing of Mario Pineida is not an isolated incident, as Ecuador has seen a surge in violence in recent months. In November, a 16-year-old soccer player from Independiente del Valle died from a stray bullet in Guayaquil. Two months earlier, three players from Exapromo Costa and 22 de Junio were killed in separate incidents, all due to gunshot wounds.
Pineida played eight games for Ecuador’s national team, including appearances in the 2017 and 2021 Copa América tournaments. His last game for Ecuador was as a late substitute in a group-stage game against Brazil. The soccer community has come together to mourn the loss of the talented player, and authorities are working to bring those responsible to justice.
