Formula 1 Title Decider: Lando Norris Takes Early Advantage in Abu Dhabi
Lando Norris has taken an early advantage in the Formula 1 title decider, narrowly beating Max Verstappen by just eight thousandths of a second in the first practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Norris, who needs to finish third on Sunday to secure his maiden title, led the way with a time that put him ahead of Verstappen, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc came in third.
Oscar Piastri, another contender for the title, was not in his McLaren for the first practice session, instead watching from the pit-wall as Pato O’Ward took his place among nine rookie drivers in mandatory action. Piastri will return to his McLaren for the second session, which is set to get underway at 17:00 local time (13:00 GMT).
Championship Standings and Outlook
Norris heads into Sunday’s 24th and concluding round at the Yas Marina Circuit with a 12-point lead over four-time world champion Verstappen. Piastri trails his McLaren teammate by 16 points, with just 25 points to play for in the season finale. Verstappen has been in impressive form, taking five victories from his last eight appearances to propel himself into the championship fight.
Despite his strong recent performances, Verstappen was unable to top the timesheets in the opening practice session, and was also unhappy with the handling of his Red Bull. “I think something is broken on the car,” he said over the radio, later adding that the issues were “everywhere now”.

Constructor Standings and Other Notable Performances
Kimi Antonelli finished fourth for Mercedes, two places ahead of teammate George Russell, as the Silver Arrows look to cement second place in the constructors’ championship. Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg split the Mercedes pair in fifth, highlighting the competitive nature of the field ahead of the season finale.
The stage is now set for a thrilling conclusion to the Formula 1 season, with Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri all in contention for the title. As the teams and drivers prepare for the second practice session and beyond, one thing is certain: the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be an unmissable event for fans of the sport.
