The Chilling Consequences of Speaking Truth to Power: The Gerald Bourguet Story

Gerald Bourguet, a former PHNX Sports reporter, recently published a video detailing the aftermath of his firing, which has sparked a national conversation about the dangers of the conservative grievance machine. Bourguet’s termination came after he tweeted about right-wing activist Charlie Kirk’s beliefs, which he strongly disagrees with. The tweets, which were widely misinterpreted, led to a backlash from Kirk’s supporters, resulting in Bourguet’s firing and a campaign of harassment against him and his family.

The Chilling Consequences of Speaking Truth to Power: The Gerald Bourguet StoryThe Tweets that Sparked the ControversyA New Chapter for Bourguet

Bourguet’s video opened with a scathing critique of his former employer, PHNX Sports, which he felt had caved to public pressure and fired him without properly considering the context of his tweets. “Losing my dream job covering the Suns has obviously been pretty tough to stomach,” Bourguet said. “Was I disappointed with my former employer’s decision, and how their statement almost painted me as some sort of violent person? Absolutely. Was it a spineless decision, in my opinion? Definitely.”

The Tweets that Sparked the Controversy

The tweets in question, which were posted in September, centered on Bourguet’s rejection of Kirk’s political beliefs and his concern about the various forms of violence that Kirk condones. In a statement announcing Bourguet’s termination, PHNX Sports said that it “take[s] matters involving violence very seriously.” However, Bourguet’s comments were not advocating for violence, but rather highlighting the hypocrisy of Kirk’s fan base.

The fallout from Bourguet’s firing was swift and brutal. His home address and phone number were released, and he and his family received credible death threats. “Within two hours of being fired, I was packing up my family and relocating them out of the state, because my wife and I were getting credible death threats towards me, towards her, and towards my four-month-old son,” Bourguet said. The threats were relentless, with Bourguet receiving nonstop calls and texts from blocked numbers, including screenshots of his name and address with menacing messages.

A New Chapter for Bourguet

Despite the trauma he and his family have endured, Bourguet remains committed to covering the Phoenix Suns, albeit from a new platform. He has announced his intention to continue writing and podcasting about the team at a new publication called Suns After Dark. Bourguet has also expressed his gratitude to those who have supported him and his family through a GoFundMe campaign, which has helped them to relocate and start anew. A portion of the funds raised has been donated to organizations that fight for gun violence public safety measures and provide aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

Bourguet’s story serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences of speaking truth to power and the dangers of the conservative grievance machine. As he navigates this new chapter in his career, he remains steadfast in his commitment to journalism and his passion for covering the Phoenix Suns. “Leaving Phoenix on these terms, where a significant portion of the Suns community wanted me fired or dead, has been a bitter pill to swallow,” Bourguet said. “I had the life and career I had dreamed of since I was a teenager. And I still don’t think I’ve been able to fully mourn it being ripped away so suddenly.”
