Arizona Diamondbacks Sign Mike Soroka to One-Year Deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million deal with right-hander Mike Soroka, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers. The contract has the potential to escalate to $9.5 million with incentives, providing a significant boost to the team’s starting rotation.

Soroka’s addition is a crucial move for the Diamondbacks, who have faced significant challenges in their starting rotation. The team lost Corbin Burnes to Tommy John surgery in June and Merrill Kelly at the trade deadline, and is expected to lose Zac Gallen in free agency this offseason. By signing Soroka, the Diamondbacks are hoping to stabilize their rotation and provide a solid foundation for the upcoming season.

Soroka’s Career and Potential

Mike Soroka is a talented and versatile pitcher who has shown significant promise in his career. At just 21 years old, he made the National League All-Star team as a rookie in 2019, finishing with a 13-4 record and a 2.68 ERA in 174 innings across 29 starts. However, his production has not matched his potential since missing the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to two Achilles tendon tears.

Since 2019, Soroka has struggled to replicate his early success, posting a 4.85 ERA in 57 games, including 35 starts, for four clubs across four seasons. In 2025, he recorded a 4.87 ERA in 16 starts for the Washington Nationals before being traded to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline. Despite his struggles, Soroka has the potential to be a key contributor to the Diamondbacks’ rotation, and the team is hoping that he can regain his form and provide a significant boost to their pitching staff.

Injury Concerns and Future Outlook

Soroka’s signing is not without risk, as he has struggled with injuries in recent years. He landed on the injured list with a strained right shoulder in early August and missed a month, limiting him to just five relief appearances and one start for the Cubs during the regular season. Despite these concerns, the Diamondbacks are confident that Soroka can provide a significant contribution to their team and are willing to take on the risk to sign him.

According to ESPN, Soroka’s deal is a calculated risk for the Diamondbacks, who are hoping to capitalize on his potential and provide a solid foundation for their starting rotation. With the potential to escalate to $9.5 million with incentives, the contract provides a significant opportunity for Soroka to prove himself and earn a substantial payday. As the Diamondbacks look to rebuild and compete in the upcoming season, the signing of Mike Soroka is a crucial move that could have a significant impact on their success.
