Khamzat Chimaev’s First Title Defense: A Middleweight Conundrum

The UFC middleweight division has been abuzz with speculation since Khamzat Chimaev claimed the title in August. The Chechen fighter’s inactivity has been a concern, with only one fight per year in the previous three years. His victory over Dricus Du Plessis was impressive, yet the lack of excitement in the bout led to questions about his first title defense.

In the autumn, the UFC set up two “semi-final” matchups to bring clarity to the title picture. Nassourdine Imavov’s decision win over Caio Borralho at UFC Paris was a standout performance, suggesting he might be next in line for the title. Meanwhile, Brendan Allen’s upset victory over Reinier de Ridder on short notice reaffirmed the notion that Imavov would be the top contender.

Uncertainty Surrounds Chimaev’s First Title Defense

Rumors have circulated about a potential lack of desire for a title fight between Chimaev and Imavov due to personal ties, as both fighters are Muslim. This has led to speculation that the fight may not happen in the first quarter of 2026. The UFC has made multiple middleweight matchups in recent weeks, further fueling the uncertainty.

Anthony Hernandez, who pulled out of a fight in November, is set to face former champion Sean Strickland in February. This matchup could be the final step for Hernandez to earn a title shot. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated UFC 326 card in March will feature Borralho against de Ridder, as both fighters look to bounce back from their first UFC losses.

Other Middleweight Contenders

Paulo Costa and Brunno Ferreira will also face off on the UFC 326 card, in a fight that, while not having direct title implications, promises to be an exciting matchup. The return of Dricus Du Plessis, who lost his title to Chimaev in August, is also highly anticipated. Additionally, fans are waiting for the return of Israel Adesanya, one of the best middleweights in the world, who is looking to stop his recent career skid.

With multiple options available, the question remains: what’s next for Khamzat Chimaev? Will he face Imavov, or will another contender emerge? The middleweight division is filled with exciting matchups, and fans are eagerly awaiting Chimaev’s first title defense.
