Nikola Jokic Makes History as Denver Nuggets Extend Winning Streak

DENVER — In a thrilling matchup at the Ball Arena, the Denver Nuggets secured their sixth consecutive win, defeating the Orlando Magic 126-115 on Thursday night. The game was marked by a historic performance from Nikola Jokic, who became the career assists leader among centers in the NBA.

Jokic achieved this milestone with 6:26 left in the first half, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 5,660 assists when he fed Jalen Pickett for a 3-pointer. This feat is a testament to Jokic’s exceptional skill and versatility on the court. He finished the game with 23 points, 13 assists, and 11 rebounds, earning his 13th triple-double of the season.

Denver’s Second-Quarter Surge

The Nuggets’ victory was largely fueled by a dominant second quarter, during which Jamal Murray scored 20 of his 32 points. Murray’s impressive performance helped Denver overcome a 14-point deficit, going on a 35-7 run in the final 6:26 of the half to take a 68-54 lead. Murray’s current form is a significant factor in the Nuggets’ success, with the guard averaging a career-best 25.2 points per game this season and 28.1 points in December.

Murray’s performance included 5 of 6 successful 3-point attempts in the second quarter, showcasing his ability to turn the tide of the game. His efforts were complemented by Jokic’s consistent playmaking and scoring, which have been instrumental in the Nuggets’ winning streak.

Orlando’s Resilience

Despite missing leading scorer Franz Wagner due to a sprained left ankle and Jalen Suggs, who sustained a left hip contusion in the NBA Cup semifinal, the Orlando Magic put up a formidable fight. Paolo Banchero led the team with 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists, achieving his third career triple-double and first since March 20, 2024. Wendell Carter Jr. also scored 26 points for Orlando, demonstrating the team’s depth and resilience in the face of adversity.

The Magic managed to cut the Nuggets’ lead to 92-83 in the third quarter and later to 121-115 with 1:32 remaining. However, a crucial 3-pointer by Cam Johnson, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, sealed the win for Denver.

As the season progresses, the Nuggets’ ability to adapt and overcome challenges will be crucial in their pursuit of success. With players like Jokic and Murray leading the charge, Denver is poised to make a significant impact in the league. The team’s current winning streak is a testament to their strength and cohesion, and fans can expect exciting matchups in the coming weeks.
