Rinat Fakhretdinov Released by UFC: A Look into the Decision and Its Implications

American combat sport analyst Luke Thomas has shared his thoughts on the recent news that Russian welterweight fighter Rinat Fakhretdinov and the UFC have parted ways. Fakhretdinov, 34, made his UFC debut in 2022 against Andreas Michailidis and won by unanimous decision. He also boasts an impressive record with wins over Bryan Battle, Kevin Lee, Nicolas Dalby, and Andreas Gustafsson, among others.

Fakhretdinov’s most notable performances in the UFC include a Round 1 submission of Kevin Lee and a 54-second TKO of Gustafsson in his last outing on September 6, 2025. Despite his unbeaten run in the promotion, the UFC chose not to renew his contract after it expired. Fakhretdinov’s departure from the UFC marks the end of his 6-0-1 record in the organization.

According to recent reports, Fakhretdinov was not the only fighter released by the UFC. Loik Radzhabov and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos also parted ways with the organization. The news of Fakhretdinov’s release has sparked a discussion about the UFC’s business model and its approach to fighter contracts. A netizen, Andy Hickey MMA, posted on X that the UFC’s decision to release Fakhretdinov and other Russian fighters is likely due to their inability to generate revenue.

Andy Hickey MMA stated, “Expect more of this & an overall reduction in Russian fighters on the roster. UFC is a business. Money is the bottom line. Forget sport or meritocracy. The vast majority of Russian fighters, as elite as they’ve shown themselves to be, do not generate revenue.” Luke Thomas seconded this comment, adding that the UFC’s business model is centered around competing interests, rather than solely on merit.

Thomas explained, “This is totally reasonable and correct by Andy, but it should be understood that this is the central way their business works. Whatever else is told to Congress or media allies about the supremacy of merit, the genuine reality is much more a mix of competing interests.” Fakhretdinov has since addressed his release from the UFC, stating that his contract had expired and the organization chose not to renew it.

Fakhretdinov’s Statement and Future Plans

Fakhretdinov made it clear that he was not “fired” by the UFC, but rather his contract was not renewed. He also revealed that he has already received offers from other promotions, with significantly better pay. Fakhretdinov stated, “No one fired me, the contract expired, and for certain reasons it wasn’t renewed… The offers are already pouring in, and with very different pay.”

As the MMA community continues to discuss Fakhretdinov’s release from the UFC, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the talented Russian fighter. With his unbeaten record and impressive performances in the UFC, Fakhretdinov is likely to be a highly sought-after signing for other promotions. The news of his release serves as a reminder of the complex and often unpredictable nature of the MMA industry, where business decisions can have a significant impact on a fighter’s career.

Implications for the UFC and MMA Community

The release of Fakhretdinov and other Russian fighters raises questions about the UFC’s approach to fighter contracts and its priorities as a business. While the organization has consistently emphasized the importance of meritocracy and competition, the reality is that financial considerations play a significant role in decision-making. As the MMA community continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the UFC and other promotions balance their business interests with the needs and aspirations of their fighters.

For now, Fakhretdinov’s release from the UFC serves as a reminder of the challenges and uncertainties faced by fighters in the MMA industry. Despite his impressive record and performances, Fakhretdinov found himself without a contract, highlighting the importance of adaptability and resilience in the ever-changing world of MMA. As he explores new opportunities and considers his next move, Fakhretdinov remains a highly talented and intriguing figure in the world of MMA.
