Ben Askren Weighs in on Kamaru Usman’s Potential Title Shot

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has expressed his disagreement with the idea of Kamaru Usman receiving the next title shot against newly crowned champion Islam Makhachev. Askren believes that other top contenders have done enough to earn a title shot, and Usman’s recent losses should not warrant an immediate opportunity to reclaim the title.

Usman, the former UFC welterweight champion, has been rumored to be next in line to face Makhachev, with his manager stating that the fight will happen in 2026. However, Askren thinks that this would be unfair to other deserving contenders. In an interview with Helen Yee Sports, Askren stated, “I don’t want to sound too biased, but I really don’t [think Kamaru Usman deserves a title shot]. He obviously was a champion for a long time, but it’s been a little bit, and he has had a few more losses recently.”

Askren’s Pick for the Next Title Shot: Ian Machado Garry

Askren has instead thrown his support behind Ian Machado Garry, who he believes has earned a title shot. Garry, currently ranked No. 3 in the 170-pound division, has impressed with his recent performances, including a win over Carlos Prates and a unanimous decision victory against former champion Belal Muhammad. Askren praised Garry, saying, “I like to see when the guys earn it. I don’t love Ian Garry, but I really think he has earned it.”

Garry’s only loss in MMA came on short notice against Shavkat Rakhmonov in 2024, but he has since bounced back with two consecutive wins. While some may argue that Garry’s lack of finishes in the UFC makes him a less appealing title challenger, Askren believes that his overall performance warrants a title shot.

Makhachev, on the other hand, has expressed interest in fighting Usman, calling him his “hardest challenge.” Usman’s manager has also confirmed that the fight is in the works for 2026. However, Askren’s comments highlight the debate surrounding the welterweight division and who deserves the next title shot.

As the UFC continues to navigate the complex landscape of title contenders, fans and pundits alike will be keeping a close eye on the developments in the welterweight division. With Askren’s comments adding fuel to the fire, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds and who ultimately gets the next title shot.
