Santa Clara Showdown: Brock Purdy Leads 49ers to Thrilling Victory

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On a night when the San Francisco 49ers were without All-Pro tight end George Kittle and had All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams for only one snap, the weight of their playoff positioning fell squarely on quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy rose to the challenge, leading the Niners to a 42-38 victory over the Chicago Bears on “Sunday Night Football.” This marked the first time San Francisco has scored 40-plus points in back-to-back games since November 1995, a testament to Purdy’s exceptional performance.

The 49ers improved to 12-4 and will host the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night with the NFC West division title, the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, and home-field advantage throughout the postseason on the line. With Super Bowl LX set to be played at Levi’s Stadium, the stakes are higher than ever. To achieve these goals, the Niners will look to Purdy to continue his outstanding form, showcasing why he is one of the league’s best and most efficient quarterbacks.

Purdy’s Exceptional Performance

According to 49ers right tackle Colton McKivitz, “It’s his best [football] right now, and it’s when his best is needed. This is what this team needs – the offense to come in and score, and score a lot.” McKivitz’s sentiments echo the team’s reliance on Purdy, who has been playing better than ever, even without the skill position star power of previous rosters. Purdy’s importance was on full display Sunday night, rebounding from a pick-6 on the first play of the game to finish 24-of-33 for 303 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception, and adding 6 carries for 28 yards and 2 more scores.

Purdy has accounted for at least five TDs in two consecutive games, a feat achieved by only six quarterbacks in NFL history, including Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, and Deshaun Watson. He also became the first 49ers quarterback with at least three passing and two rushing touchdowns in a game since Jeff Garcia in 2003. With just two off-target throws out of 33 pass attempts against Chicago, Purdy demonstrated his precision and control.

Coach Shanahan’s Praise

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan praised Purdy, saying, “Brock had a hell of a game. Brock has been playing his ass off, made some huge plays in this game. Kept some drives alive with his legs, made some off-schedule plays, and he’s an assassin out there… he’s playing as good as it gets right now.” Shanahan’s words reflect the team’s confidence in Purdy, who has been playing at an elite level since returning from a right big toe injury in Week 11.

According to NFL statistics, since Week 11, Purdy ranks third in QBR (80.0) and touchdown passes per game (2.67), second in completion percentage over expectation (7.5%), ninth in passing yards per game (242.3), and fifth in yards per attempt (7.9). His off-target throw percentage is the lowest in the league at 10.3%. These numbers support the notion that Purdy is playing as well as any NFL quarterback, making him a crucial factor in the 49ers’ success.

Upcoming Showdown with the Seahawks

Purdy and the 49ers have a second consecutive short week of preparation before Saturday’s showdown with the Seahawks. The NFC’s top seed will come down to a meeting against Seattle in the regular-season finale, with significant playoff stakes. In 2019, the 49ers won a similar game against the Seahawks, securing the NFC West division title and eventually appearing in Super Bowl LIV. Coach Shanahan, while not thrilled with another short week, emphasized the importance of the upcoming game, saying, “It’s huge. So proud of the guys throughout the whole year, proud of today. It’s a hell of a deal being able to have the opportunity to play for the 1-seed, and these guys have earned it.”

As the 49ers prepare to face the Seahawks, they will look to Purdy to continue his exceptional performance and lead the team to victory. With the NFC West division title, the No. 1 seed, and home-field advantage on the line, the stakes are high, but the 49ers are confident in their quarterback’s ability to deliver.
