Nuggets’ Jamal Murray Suffers Ankle Sprain in Loss to Mavericks

DENVER — In a concerning turn of events for the Denver Nuggets, point guard Jamal Murray sprained his right ankle during Monday night’s 131-121 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. The injury occurred early in the third quarter, prompting Murray to walk gingerly to the locker room before returning to close out the period. However, he was noticeably absent from the bench for the final 12 minutes of the game, which marked Denver’s fourth consecutive home loss.

According to Coach David Adelman, Murray will undergo evaluation on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury. Adelman expressed concern about the potential impact of Murray’s absence, stating, “It’s a huge absence, obviously, offensively. Jamal’s such a tough player. If he sits himself because of the pain, it probably hurts. I’m hoping he can come back [for the next game].” Murray was averaging a career-high 24 points coming into the game and finished with 10 points and nine assists, a notable decrease from his usual performance.

Impact on the Team’s Performance

The loss of Murray was deeply felt, particularly in the pick-and-roll plays with Nikola Jokic, as noted by Spencer Jones, who scored a career-high 28 points for the Nuggets. “It definitely was a hit, especially coming down the stretch,” Jones said. “Everybody knows the deadly pick-and-roll of Mal and [Nikola Jokic]. We definitely struggled.” This sentiment reflects the significant role Murray plays in the team’s offense and the challenges the Nuggets face without him.

Murray’s injury history is also a concern, having torn his left ACL late in the 2020-21 season. However, he made a strong comeback, averaging 26.1 points and 7.1 assists during the 2023 postseason, which culminated in Denver winning its first NBA championship. The potential absence of Murray, combined with the existing injuries to starters Aaron Gordon (right hamstring) and Christian Braun (left ankle sprain), poses significant challenges for the team’s lineup and defensive strategy.

Team’s Injury Status and Defensive Challenges

Aaron Gordon was hurt in Houston on Nov. 21 and isn’t expected back until late December or early January, while Christian Braun sprained his ankle at the Clippers on Nov. 12 and is projected to miss at least six weeks. Both Gordon and Braun are key defenders, and their absences have been noticeable at times. Coach Adelman emphasized the need for the team to focus on its current roster rather than dwelling on absent players, stating, “I’m not going to come in here any night and sit down and talk about guys that are out. We have enough here to be more consistent defensively.”

As the Nuggets navigate these injuries and work towards regaining their defensive consistency, they will look to their current lineup to step up and fill the gaps. With Murray’s evaluation pending, the team and its fans await news on the extent of his injury and the potential timeline for his return. The Nuggets’ ability to adapt and perform without key players will be crucial in the coming games, especially as they strive to regain their winning form and defend their NBA championship title.
