Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire Yegor Chinakhov from Columbus Blue Jackets
The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a significant move to bolster their lineup, acquiring 24-year-old forward Yegor Chinakhov from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. Chinakhov, a talented young player, is expected to bring a new level of excitement and energy to the Penguins’ roster. In exchange for Chinakhov, the Penguins sent forward Danton Heinen, a 2026 second-round draft pick originally belonging to the St. Louis Blues, and a 2027 third-round pick originally belonging to the Washington Capitals to the Blue Jackets.
Heinen, a 10-year NHL veteran, cleared waivers earlier on Monday and has been assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) by Columbus. Chinakhov, who is in his fifth NHL season, has a salary cap hit of $2.1 million and is set to become a restricted free agent next summer. He signed a two-year extension with the Blue Jackets in June 2024. The Russian winger was selected 21st overall in the 2020 NHL draft and has been looking for a fresh start after requesting a trade during the offseason.
Chinakhov’s Career and Trade Request
Chinakhov’s career has been plagued by injuries, which have limited his playing time and opportunities. His rookie season in 2021-22 remains his most productive, with 62 games played. Despite his talent and potential, Chinakhov has struggled to secure a spot among the Blue Jackets’ top six forwards. He had expressed his desire for a trade, citing “some misunderstandings with the coach” during the season. The change of scenery is expected to provide Chinakhov with a new opportunity to fulfill his potential and contribute to the Penguins’ success.
This season, Chinakhov has recorded three goals and three assists in 29 games, with his average ice time dropping significantly from 15:43 last season to just 10:18. The trade is seen as a positive move for both parties, with the Blue Jackets gaining additional draft capital and a solid two-way player in Heinen. Columbus general manager Don Waddell commented, “This trade provides us with additional draft capital over the next two years and a good two-way player in Danton Heinen that will add to our organizational depth at the forward position.”
Impact on the Penguins and Blue Jackets
The acquisition of Chinakhov is expected to bring a new level of excitement and energy to the Penguins’ lineup. With his speed, skill, and agility, Chinakhov has the potential to make an immediate impact and contribute to the team’s success. The trade also demonstrates the Penguins’ commitment to building a competitive roster and addressing their needs. On the other hand, the Blue Jackets will benefit from the additional draft capital and the addition of Heinen, who will provide depth and experience to their forward lineup.
As the NHL season continues, the trade is likely to have significant implications for both teams. The Penguins will be looking to integrate Chinakhov into their lineup and capitalize on his potential, while the Blue Jackets will focus on utilizing their newfound draft capital and Heinen’s skills to strengthen their roster. With the trade, both teams have taken a step towards achieving their goals and improving their chances of success in the highly competitive NHL.
