Victor Wembanyama Suffers Knee Injury in Spurs’ Win Over Knicks

SAN ANTONIO — In a thrilling 134-132 win over the New York Knicks on Wednesday night, San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama limped off the court in the fourth quarter after his left knee buckled while attempting to secure a rebound under the basket. The injury occurred with 10:32 left in the game, and Wembanyama immediately grabbed at his left knee after the play, prompting concern among the Spurs’ coaching staff and fans.

Fortunately, Wembanyama’s initial assessment of the injury suggests that it may not be as severe as initially thought. “I was confident. I was this close to coming back in the game,” Wembanyama said in a post-game interview. “[They] had to hold me back. It was just a hyperextension, so it should be minimal. We’ve got to do everything tomorrow still to check that everything’s OK.” The French center added that he expects to be back on the court for the next game, which is a positive sign for the Spurs and their fans.

Initial Tests and Prognosis

According to Wembanyama, initial tests did not reveal any other issues beyond the hyperextension, and he will undergo further testing on Thursday to confirm the diagnosis. This cautious approach is understandable, given Wembanyama’s history of injuries, including a left calf strain that kept him out of 12 games earlier in the season. The Spurs’ medical staff will likely take a careful and thorough approach to ensure that Wembanyama is fully healed before clearing him to play.

Wembanyama’s teammate, Stephon Castle, was quick to assist him after the injury, helping him to his feet and walking with him to the locker room. The Spurs’ coach, Mitch Johnson, also expressed relief that Wembanyama was able to finish the game on the bench, which suggests that the injury may not be as serious as initially thought. “Have not been able to talk to the medical staff yet, but I think I saw what everybody else saw,” Johnson said. “Obviously, he finished the game on the bench with his teammates. So, I think that made me feel good.”

Wembanyama’s Performance and Impact

Despite the injury, Wembanyama had a impressive game, finishing with 31 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes on the floor. This performance is consistent with his averages for the season, which include 24.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game. Wembanyama’s dominance on the court has been a key factor in the Spurs’ success this season, and his absence would be deeply felt if he were to miss any significant time due to injury.

As the Spurs look to build on their win over the Knicks, they will be keeping a close eye on Wembanyama’s progress and hoping that he can return to the court soon. With a deep playoff run on the horizon, the Spurs will need Wembanyama at full strength if they hope to make a serious push for a championship. For now, fans will have to wait and see how Wembanyama’s injury progresses, but the initial signs are cautiously optimistic.
