San Francisco Giants Sign Right-Hander Tyler Mahle to One-Year Deal

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a one-year deal with right-hander Tyler Mahle, a source confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday. This move bolsters the Giants’ rotation, which was ranked 17th in the majors with a 4.10 ERA last season. Mahle, 31, is expected to join a rotation led by All-Stars Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, and will look to bounce back from a shoulder injury that limited him to 16 starts in 2025.

Mahle’s career has been marked by flashes of brilliance, including a career-best 2.18 ERA in 2025 with the Texas Rangers. However, injuries have limited him to just 24 starts and 125 innings over the past three seasons. Despite this, Mahle has shown promise, with a 4.07 ERA and 753 strikeouts in 144 games (141 starts) across his nine-year career. The Giants will be his fourth team, following stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers, and Minnesota Twins.

The Giants have been quiet in the offseason, coming off a third-place 81-81 season in the National League West. However, they have made a few key moves, including signing right-hander Adrian Houser to a two-year, $22 million deal earlier this month. The team has also signed relievers Sam Hentges and Jason Foley to major-league deals for bullpen depth. Other internal options to start games include Landen Roupp, Carson Whisenhunt, JT Brubaker, Hayden Birdsong, and Blade Tidwell.

Mahle’s Injury History and Career Stats

Mahle’s deal with the Giants was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. According to ESPN, Mahle missed the first four months of the 2024 season with Texas while recovering from elbow surgery and then was sidelined again with shoulder tightness. Despite these setbacks, Mahle has shown resilience and a ability to perform at a high level when healthy. His career stats include a 39-46 record, 4.07 ERA, and 753 strikeouts in 144 games (141 starts).

With the addition of Mahle, the Giants’ rotation is shaping up to be a formidable force in the National League West. The team will look to build on their 81-81 season and make a push for the playoffs in the upcoming season.
