Zuffa Boxing Era Set to Kick Off on Paramount+

The highly anticipated Zuffa Boxing era is slated to commence on January 23, 2024, at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, with an exciting matchup between undefeated Irish junior middleweight prospect Callum Walsh (15-0, 11 KOs) and seasoned veteran Carlos Ocampo (38-3, 26 KOs) in the main event. This announcement was made by Zuffa executive and UFC CEO Dana White during his appearance on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on Friday.

The event will take place just a day before UFC 324, which will feature Justin Gaethje taking on Paddy Pimblett for the interim UFC lightweight title at T-Mobile Arena. Walsh, 24, has been gaining attention for his impressive skills, with many of his fights being featured on UFC Fight Pass. His most recent bout was in September, where he secured a narrow unanimous decision over Fernando Vargas Jr. in the co-main event of Terence Crawford’s win over Canelo Alvarez.

Ocampo, 30, has been on a winning streak, with three consecutive victories since being stopped in the first round by Tim Tszyu in June 2023. His other two losses were to current unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora and former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. White has expressed his enthusiasm for the matchup, stating, “When I talk about matchmaking, I’m going to have all these up-and-coming guys. We have this kid named Ocampo, who is a seasoned veteran. His only losses are in title fights — three title fight losses. He has more knockouts than Callum has fights. Callum, undefeated, 15-0, and it’s the main event. Should be a badass boxing event.”

Zuffa Boxing’s Vision for the Sport

According to White, Zuffa Boxing aims to revolutionize the sport by offering quality matchmaking, introducing its own world titles and ranking system, and getting rid of sanctioning organizations. He emphasized, “I’ve been talking smack about boxing for a long time, and now it’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is. I’m going to get rid of the sanctioning organizations. The best will fight the best. We’re going to sign all the young, up-and-coming guys.” White believes that this approach will lead to more exciting and meaningful matches, where the best fighters will face each other, and undefeated records will truly be a testament to a fighter’s skill.

As the boxing world awaits the inaugural Zuffa Boxing event, fans can expect a thrilling matchup between Walsh and Ocampo. With Zuffa Boxing’s commitment to quality matchmaking and its vision for the sport, this event is sure to set the tone for what the promotion has to offer. As White said, “If you break into the top 10, and you’re still undefeated, your undefeated record means something. You know what I mean? Everybody’s undefeated in boxing because nobody fights anybody, right? Everybody will fight everybody.” The future of boxing looks promising, and Zuffa Boxing is poised to make a significant impact on the sport.
