NHL Suspends Pittsburgh Penguins’ Caleb Jones for 20 Games

The National Hockey League (NHL) has suspended Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Caleb Jones for 20 games, effective immediately, due to a violation of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. This decision was announced on Wednesday, and it comes as a result of Jones testing positive for a prohibited substance.

Jones, 28, is in his first season with the Penguins, having signed a two-year deal with the team last summer. Unfortunately, his season has been marred by injuries, including a foot injury that led to him being placed on injured reserve in late October. He was later assigned to the Penguins’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he played one game in January before sustaining an upper-body injury.

Statement from Caleb Jones

In a statement released by the NHL Players Association, Jones expressed his disappointment and apologized for the situation. He claimed that he believes he was exposed to a contaminated substance while undergoing exosome therapy from an outside provider. Jones emphasized that he did not intentionally use the prohibited substance for performance enhancement and acknowledged that players are responsible for everything that enters their body.

“While I did not use the prohibited substance intentionally or for performance enhancement, I understand that players are responsible for everything that enters their body and accept the discipline imposed by the program,” Jones said. “I’m sorry to have let down my teammates, the Penguins organization, and our fans.”

Reaction from the Penguins Organization

Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas released a statement appreciating Jones’ transparency and announcing that the club will support him throughout the suspension. Dubas added that Jones will follow all NHL and NHLPA protocols during this period, ensuring that he meets the necessary requirements for his return to the team.

“We appreciate Caleb’s transparency and cooperation throughout this process,” Dubas said. “He has our full support, and we will work with him to ensure that he completes the necessary protocols and is ready to return to the team when his suspension is lifted.”

Jones, the younger brother of Panthers defenseman Seth Jones, had a promising start to the season, recording one point in seven games with the Penguins in October. However, his injuries and subsequent suspension have limited his playing time, and he will now have to wait until his suspension is lifted to rejoin his teammates on the ice.

The NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program is designed to protect the integrity of the game and ensure that players compete fairly and safely. The program includes regular testing, education, and support for players to prevent the use of prohibited substances. Jones’ suspension serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the program’s rules and regulations.

As the Penguins move forward without Jones, they will rely on their depth and other players to fill the gap. The team will continue to support Jones throughout his suspension, and he will have the opportunity to return to the team when his suspension is lifted. The NHL will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that all players are held to the same standards, maintaining the integrity of the game.
