Baltimore Orioles Secure Starting Rotation with Five-Year Deal for Shane Baz

The Baltimore Orioles have made a significant move to fortify their starting rotation, agreeing to a five-year deal with right-hander Shane Baz worth $68 million, according to sources cited by ESPN. This deal not only solidifies the team’s commitment to Baz but also underscores their belief in his potential to become a front-of-the-rotation starter.

Baz, 26, has had a tumultuous career marred by injuries, which have limited him to just 286 major league innings. Despite this, his impressive arsenal, including a fastball that averages 96 mph and peaks at 99, along with a wicked knuckle curve and three other pitches, positions him among the game’s most promising arms. The Orioles’ investment in Baz is a testament to their confidence in his ability to overcome his injury-plagued past and realize his significant upside.

A Talent Rediscovered

Originally the 12th overall pick in the 2017 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baz was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in the Chris Archer deal the following year. His debut in 2021 hinted at a future star, but subsequent elbow surgeries, including an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, led to him missing all of 2023 and half of 2024. However, since his return, Baz has shown resilience, not missing a start and demonstrating the return of his premium stuff with 176 strikeouts last season, despite a 4.87 ERA that was above the league average.

The Orioles’ starting pitching, which was a notable weakness in the previous season, culminating in a 75-87 record and a missed postseason appearance, has undergone significant improvement. With the addition of left-hander Trevor Rogers, who threw seven shutout innings on Opening Day, and right-hander Kyle Bradish, who showed star potential upon his return from Tommy John surgery, alongside free agent signings Chris Bassitt and Zach Eflin, the team’s rotation now looks markedly stronger. Baz is expected to slot into the middle of this rotation, bringing a high level of talent and potential for consistent performance.

A Strategic Investment

The five-year deal for Baz, which will cover three arbitration seasons and buy out two free agent years, is a strategic move by the Orioles. It not only ensures the long-term stability of their starting rotation but also reflects the team’s belief in Baz’s capacity to remain healthy and perform at a high level. By securing Baz through 2028 and beyond, the Orioles are doubling down on their winter trade, which saw them deal four prospects and the No. 33 pick in the 2026 draft to acquire him.

This investment in Baz is indicative of the Orioles’ commitment to building a competitive team around a core of talented players. With a rotation that now boasts depth and quality, the Orioles are positioning themselves for a strong season, aiming to return to the postseason after a year’s absence. The deal for Baz, with its emphasis on long-term potential and performance, marks a significant step in this journey, underscoring the team’s dedication to success and their faith in the young right-hander’s ability to play a central role in achieving it.
