Buffalo Bills Fire Head Coach Sean McDermott After Another Disappointing Season
The Buffalo Bills have parted ways with head coach Sean McDermott, ending his nine-year tenure with the team. The decision comes after another season that failed to result in a Super Bowl appearance, with the Bills losing 33-30 to the Denver Broncos in overtime of the AFC divisional round. This marks the fourth time in five seasons that the Bills have exited in the divisional round.
McDermott, 51, leaves Buffalo with a 98-50 record and an 8-8 mark in the postseason, including two AFC championship losses to the Kansas City Chiefs. He won five consecutive AFC East titles from 2020 to 2024, finishing second at 12-5 behind the New England Patriots this season. Despite his impressive regular-season record, McDermott’s inability to lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance ultimately led to his dismissal.
A New Era for the Bills
The Bills have promoted Brandon Beane to president of football operations, and he will lead the team’s search for a new coach. Beane, who will remain in his role as general manager, has been with the team since 2017 and has been instrumental in shaping the roster. “Brandon will oversee all facets of our football operation,” owner Terry Pegula said. “I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization.”
The change will also impact reigning MVP quarterback Josh Allen, who will have a new coach for the first time in his professional career. Allen is going into his ninth NFL season next year and has the most playoff wins and starts by any quarterback without a Super Bowl start in the Super Bowl era. The Bills’ top priority is winning with Allen, who turns 30 in May and is coming off a down year.
McDermott’s Legacy
McDermott’s tenure with the Bills was marked by consistent regular-season success, but an inability to translate that to the postseason. He led the team to break a historic 18-year playoff drought in 2017 and established a culture of toughness and grit. McDermott was a consistent defender of Buffalo, often speaking up about what the western New York community means to him and the drive of establishing a culture and bringing a Super Bowl title to the area for the first time.
Defensive tackles Jordan Phillips and DaQuan Jones showed their frustration at McDermott’s firing in Instagram story posts, with Phillips calling McDermott the “best coach I’ve ever been around.” McDermott has been a respected figure in the NFL, and his departure will likely lead to him emerging as a head coaching candidate for other teams.
The Bills’ search for a new coach will be led by Beane, who will look to find a candidate who can lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance. The team has a talented roster, led by Allen, and a new stadium set to debut next season. With the right coach, the Bills will look to finally break through and bring a championship to Buffalo.
