Australian Open Upset: Jessica Pegula Defeats Madison Keys
MELBOURNE, Australia — In a thrilling match at the Australian Open, defending champion Madison Keys was knocked out by fellow American and podcast pal, Jessica Pegula, on Monday at Rod Laver Arena. The sixth-seeded Pegula secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the ninth-seeded Keys.
Pegula, 31, dominated the first set, winning it in just 32 minutes. She quickly took a 4-1 lead and maintained her momentum, breaking Keys’ serve to open the second set and surging to a 4-1 lead once again. Keys struggled with her serve throughout the match, ultimately hitting a forehand into the net to seal her defeat.
According to Pegula, her strategy was to “stay true” to her playing style and “lean into” Keys’ tendencies. “I’ve been playing really well, seeing the ball, hitting the ball really well this whole tournament, and I wanted to stay true to that,” Pegula said in a post-match interview. “Then just lean into a couple things that I felt like she would do, and I felt like I came out doing it pretty well.” Pegula also emphasized the importance of maintaining her lead and focusing on her own game, even when Keys gained some momentum.
Pegula’s Road to the Quarterfinals
This marks Pegula’s fourth appearance in the Australian Open quarterfinals. Her best performance in a major was reaching the US Open final in 2024, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. With her win over Keys, Pegula has demonstrated her skill and determination, setting herself up for a potential deep run in the tournament.
Pegula and Keys have a history of competition, having played each other three times previously. Keys had won their last two matches, but Pegula’s strong serve and minimal unforced errors gave her the upper hand on Monday. As the tournament progresses, Pegula will look to continue her success and make a strong push for the championship title.
