Milwaukee Bucks’ Struggles Continue: Giannis Antetokounmpo Cites Chemistry Issues
The Milwaukee Bucks’ woes continued on Wednesday as they suffered a 122-102 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that was missing several key players due to injuries. This defeat marked the Bucks’ fourth loss in their last five games, with each of their past three losses being decided by at least 18 points.
After the game, Bucks’ star player Giannis Antetokounmpo expressed his concerns about the team’s chemistry, stating that it might be a contributing factor to their recent struggles. “We’re not playing hard,” Antetokounmpo said. “We aren’t doing the right thing. We’re not playing to win. We’re not playing together. Our chemistry’s not there. Guys are being selfish, trying to look for their own shots instead of looking for the right shot for the team.”
Chemistry Issues and Selfish Play
Antetokounmpo’s comments highlight the team’s inability to work together effectively, with players focusing on individual performances rather than the team’s overall success. This lack of cohesion has led to a string of disappointing losses, putting the Bucks’ streak of nine consecutive playoff appearances in jeopardy. Currently, the team sits 11th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 18-25 record.
The Bucks’ struggles are further compounded by the absence of Kevin Porter Jr., who is sidelined with an oblique strain. Porter is the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 16.8 points per game, and leads the team in assists with 7.4 per game. Coach Doc Rivers confirmed that Porter’s return date is uncertain, saying, “He’s not going to play anytime soon, I can tell you that, but we don’t know how long he’ll be out.”
Getting the Ball to Giannis
One potential solution to the Bucks’ woes could be to get the ball in Antetokounmpo’s hands more frequently. The two-time MVP has had 13 field goal attempts or fewer in his last four games, including just 11 against the Thunder. Antetokounmpo acknowledged that he needs to be more aggressive and demand the ball, saying, “I’m not the guy that will yell and cuss his teammate out and demand the ball… But I feel like I’ve played with teammates that kind of understand the gravity that I can cause for our team, in how I can create for teammates and for myself, and how I can help the team be more successful.”
Antetokounmpo also referenced the concept of being a “black swan,” which he described as being more aggressive and demanding the ball. He noted that this is something he has never done in his career but might need to adopt to help the team succeed. As the Bucks look to turn their season around, they will need to find a way to overcome their chemistry issues and get back to playing cohesive, team-oriented basketball.
