Victor Wembanyama’s Return Sparks San Antonio Spurs to Victory Over Oklahoma City Thunder

The San Antonio Spurs secured a thrilling 111-109 win over the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night, thanks in large part to the return of big man Victor Wembanyama. After a nearly month-long absence due to a strained left calf, Wembanyama came off the bench for the first time in his career and made an immediate impact, scoring 22 points in 21 minutes of action.

Wembanyama’s performance sparked a comeback victory for the Spurs, who overcame an early 16-point deficit to hand the Thunder just their second loss of the season. The win marked a significant milestone for San Antonio, who are working to end a six-year postseason drought. As Wembanyama noted, “We did it together as a team… We started off 0-for-10 from the 3-point line, but we settled in and we started getting some stops. And we hang our hat on the defensive end. I think we showed that we can guard.”

Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 23 points, while Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each added 22. The team’s balanced scoring effort marked the first time since March that the Spurs finished with four scorers with 20-plus points, according to ESPN Research. As Vassell explained, “We did it together as a team… It wasn’t just one person. We started off 0-for-10 from the 3-point line, but we settled in and we started getting some stops.”

Wembanyama’s Return to Action

Wembanyama’s return to the court was a significant factor in the Spurs’ victory. After being sidelined for 12 games, he was able to compete in the same game alongside Fox, Castle, and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper for the first time this season. As coach Mitch Johnson noted, “It’s exciting… There are a lot of conversations and ideas stemming back to the summer of how we want to play, different combinations, ways to try to take advantage of different guy’s strengths, and combinations on the floor. We’ve had to be patient with some of that. So, we’re trying to understand that it’s just getting started now, but we’re also embracing that.”

Wembanyama’s teammates responded to his absence by rolling to a record of 9-3, demonstrating the team’s depth and resilience. As Wembanyama said, “Almost every night they have proven to me that I have nothing to worry about… The brand of basketball we are playing, that they have been playing, just makes me proud because it’s getting closer to the ideal basketball in my opinion. It’s just beautiful to see.”

Looking Ahead

The Spurs’ victory over the Thunder could prove to be a key inflection point in their season, particularly as they work to end their postseason drought. With Wembanyama back in the lineup, the team is poised to make a push for the playoffs. As Wembanyama noted, “This OKC team, they’re not just first in the league. They’re way ahead of everybody. And when you watch them, no matter who, whether it’s the 12th man or the starting five, whether they’re playing against the 15th seed or any kind of game, they’re playing the same way. They’re enjoying the little things that make them win, and this is the next step we have to pass.”

With their entire roster now fully healthy, the Spurs are looking to build on their momentum and make a deep run in the playoffs. As coach Johnson said, “It’s probably the most fun for the guys just to see their excitement… We’re trying to understand that it’s just getting started now, but we’re also embracing that.”

Victor Wembanyama scored 22 points in 21 minutes in his return to action to help the Spurs hand the defending champion Thunder just their second loss of the season.
