LeBron James Continues to Defy Father Time with Recent Scoring Surge
LeBron James is once again proving that his career is one that defies convention for an aging star. In the Los Angeles Lakers’ recent 111-103 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, James scored 30 points, marking the seventh time in the Lakers’ past 12 games that he has scored 25 points or more. This surge in scoring has not only helped the Lakers win three games in a row but has also solidified James’ position as a leader on the team.
Despite his impressive performance, James was quick to reiterate the pecking order for the Lakers, stating that Luka Doncic is the team’s franchise player and that it’s up to the rest of the team to adapt their game around him. “Luka don’t need to bend his game [for me],” James said. “Luka is our [26-year-old] franchise for this ballclub. He don’t need to bend his game. It’s up to us to bend our game around him and figure it out.” This selfless approach has been a key factor in the Lakers’ recent success, with Doncic also scoring 30 points against the Pelicans.
Doncic and James: A Dynamic Duo
The combination of Doncic and James has been a nightmare for opposing defenses, with the pair topping the 30-point mark together for the second time in the Lakers’ past three games. Doncic praised James, saying, “He’s been absolutely amazing. Just helping me out, helping others out, being super efficient on the field goals…. That’s Bron. He can do anything. Just really appreciate him…. We are playing better with each other, game by game. And this is just going to be improving more.” This partnership has been instrumental in the Lakers’ current win streak, with the team missing two starters in Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
James’ recent form has been impressive, with the 41-year-old averaging 29 points on 58.8% shooting during the Lakers’ current win streak. He led an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter against the Pelicans, erasing their seven-point lead to start the period. Doncic then put the finishing touches on the game late, drawing a charge on New Orleans rookie Derik Queen and hitting two 3s of his own.
Coach Redick’s Approach to Utilizing James
Lakers coach JJ Redick has been working closely with James to ensure that he is utilized effectively, given his age and injury history. Redick said, “I know LeBron, I know how much he puts into this. I think it’s just recognizing, game to game, what he has. He’s Greg Maddux at the end of his career. Every night he doesn’t have his best stuff, but he has enough to win. I’m his catcher. I’ve got to figure out how to call the pitches. Sometimes he tells me to F off and he calls his own pitch, which is fine too.” This approach has been successful, with James showing that he still has what it takes to perform at a high level.
As the Lakers look to continue their win streak, James’ availability will be crucial. However, given his age and the demands of the NBA schedule, his availability for the second night of a back-to-back against the San Antonio Spurs is uncertain. “Every back-to-back, for the rest of the season, is TBD,” James said. “I am 41. I got the most minutes in NBA history. Bank [that answer] right now.” This cautious approach is understandable, given James’ commitment to longevity and his desire to maintain a high level of performance.
