Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Ryan McDonagh to Three-Year Extension

The Tampa Bay Lightning have secured the services of veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh for the next three years, signing him to a $12.3 million extension. As announced by General Manager Julien BriseBois on Thursday, McDonagh’s new contract will kick in when he is 37 years old and will count $4.1 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 season.

Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Ryan McDonagh to Three-Year ExtensionCap Implications and Injury Update

McDonagh has been an integral part of the Lightning’s success in recent years, helping the team win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, as well as reaching the Final in 2022. Although they lost to the Colorado Avalanche in six games, McDonagh’s contributions to the team’s defense were invaluable. After being traded to the Nashville Predators in the summer of 2022 to clear cap space, McDonagh was reacquired by the Lightning in 2024.

Cap Implications and Injury Update

The new contract will have McDonagh account for less than 4% of the cap each of the next three years, thanks to record cap increases. This is a significant development, considering the team’s current injury woes. McDonagh is currently injured, along with several other key players, including No. 1 defenseman Victor Hedman. Despite these challenges, the Lightning have still managed to win 16 of 26 games and lead the Atlantic Division.

According to NHL.com, the Lightning’s resilience in the face of injuries is a testament to the team’s depth and determination. As noted by Tampa Bay Times, McDonagh’s extension is a strategic move by the team to maintain their competitive edge in the league. With his experience and expertise, McDonagh will continue to play a crucial role in the Lightning’s defense, and his new contract is a vote of confidence in his abilities.

As the Lightning continue to navigate the challenges of the current season, McDonagh’s extension provides a sense of stability and continuity. With his contract in place, the team can focus on making a strong push for the playoffs and potentially another Stanley Cup championship.
