Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miss 2026 NBA All-Star Game Due to Calf Injury

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks’ star player, will miss the 2026 NBA All-Star game due to a calf injury he sustained during a loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. This is Antetokounmpo’s second calf injury this season, and it’s a significant concern as calf injuries can be linked to more severe issues like Achilles tendon ruptures. As a result, Antetokounmpo will be out for an extended period, which will impact the Bucks’ chances of making the playoffs.

According to NBA experts, Antetokounmpo’s injury will not only affect his participation in the All-Star game but also his chances of making the All-NBA team. The threshold for qualification is 65 games, and with Antetokounmpo already missing 14 games this season, it’s unlikely he’ll reach the required number of games. This would be a significant setback for Antetokounmpo, who has made the All-NBA team every year since 2016 and has been a first-team selection for seven consecutive seasons.

Impact on the Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks are currently 18-26, 2.5 games out of the play-in, and their record without Antetokounmpo is a dismal 3-11. The team’s net rating is also 16 points per 100 possessions worse without Antetokounmpo on the floor. With Antetokounmpo expected to miss over a month, the Bucks will have to rely on other players like A.J. Green, Bobby Portis, Ryan Rollins, Myles Turner, and Kyle Kuzma to fill the void. However, as ESPN analyst Zach Lowe notes, the Bucks are not a well-rounded team and are heavily reliant on Antetokounmpo’s performance.

The Bucks’ front office may be tempted to make a win-now trade to try and salvage the season, but this approach has not yielded positive results in the past. As CBS Sports writer James Herbert points out, the Bucks have made several ill-fated trades in recent years, which have depleted their draft picks and hindered their ability to rebuild. With the 2026 trade deadline approaching on February 5, the Bucks will have to decide whether to pursue another short-term fix or take a more long-term approach.

Long-term Implications

The Bucks’ situation is further complicated by their draft pick obligations. They will receive the less favorable of either their own first-round draft pick or the New Orleans Pelicans’ pick, while the other pick will go to the Atlanta Hawks. If the Bucks finish with a poor record, they may end up with a lower draft pick, which could have significant long-term implications. As NBA expert Danny Leroux notes, the Bucks may be facing a critical juncture in their franchise’s history, where they must decide whether to prioritize short-term gains or long-term sustainability.

Ultimately, the Bucks’ decision will depend on Antetokounmpo’s input and the team’s overall goals. As ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski reports, Antetokounmpo may be considering his options, including a potential trade demand. Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that the Bucks are at a crossroads, and their choices will have far-reaching consequences for the franchise’s future.
