UFC Flyweight Contender Maycee Barber Expresses Concerns Over Referee Mark Smith’s Performance

Maycee Barber, a prominent UFC flyweight contender, has recently spoken out about her concerns regarding referee Mark Smith’s performance during her victory over Karine Silva at UFC 323. The incident in question involved an illegal kick from Silva, which Barber believes was not adequately addressed by Smith. In a post-fight interview, Barber explained her perspective on the situation, citing her disappointment and frustration with Smith’s handling of the incident.

According to Barber, when Smith approached her after the illegal kick, she was still trying to regain her composure. “He came over there asking me what was going on. I was like, I’m fine, I’m a little dizzy but I’m fine,” Barber recalled. She acknowledged that she was wobbled by the kick but chose to continue fighting, taking Silva down to the ground. However, Barber was surprised by Smith’s assessment of the situation, stating that the kick was merely a “glancing blow.”

Barber’s Frustration and Concerns

Barber’s frustration stems from her belief that Smith did not take adequate action in response to the illegal kick. She stated, “The intention of the upkick when someone kicks you, is to get up. Her intention was to kick and get up. In my mind, if you’re the ref, you would put someone back down on the ground. At least put her back down on the ground, if not take a point or both.” Barber feels that Smith’s inaction may have put her at risk, and she is now hesitant to have him referee her future fights.

As a professional athlete, Barber’s concerns are not only about her personal safety but also about the potential impact on her career. She emphasized, “People have bad days, so I try not to be too harsh, but at the same time, that’s my job. My job is on the line. He can have a bad day at work, but he’s going to get paid regardless. It kind of sucks that we have us athletes that have to go in and have people that can have off days and still get paid and risk our jobs.” Barber’s comments highlight the importance of having competent and fair referees in the UFC, as their decisions can have significant consequences for the athletes involved.

Expert Opinion and Context

According to MMA Fighting, Barber’s concerns about Smith’s performance are not isolated. The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the role of referees in the UFC and the need for consistent and fair decision-making. As the UFC continues to grow and evolve, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of its athletes, ensuring that they can compete at the highest level without undue risk.

In conclusion, Maycee Barber’s experience with referee Mark Smith at UFC 323 has raised important questions about the role of referees in the UFC and the need for accountability and fairness. As a prominent flyweight contender, Barber’s concerns should be taken seriously, and the UFC should strive to provide a safe and competitive environment for all its athletes. By prioritizing athlete safety and well-being, the UFC can continue to thrive and grow, providing exciting and competitive matches for fans around the world.
