Rory McIlroy Urges Teammates to Pay Fines and Prove Loyalty
Rory McIlroy has called on his Ryder Cup teammates, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, to put their money where their mouths are and pay the fines imposed by the DP World Tour. The pair were sanctioned for participating in LIV Golf events while still members of the DP World Tour, but their cases are yet to be resolved after they appealed.
The issue has sparked a heated debate, with McIlroy suggesting that paying the fines would be a straightforward way for Rahm and Hatton to demonstrate their commitment to the DP World Tour and the Ryder Cup team. “Absolutely, yeah,” McIlroy said in a news conference ahead of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. “We went really hard on the Americans about being paid to play the Ryder Cup, and we also said that we would pay to play in Ryder Cups. There are two guys that can prove it.”
McIlroy’s comments come after a strong showing by the European team at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last year, where they claimed a famous victory. The team’s patriotic spirit was evident, with players stating that they would pay to play in the event rather than receive payment, unlike their American counterparts.
DP World Tour Rules and Regulations
McIlroy emphasized that the DP World Tour has the right to uphold its rules and regulations, which all members agree to at the start of each year. “I think any organisation or any members’ organisation like this has a right to uphold its rules and regulations,” he said. “What the DP World Tour is doing is upholding its rules and regulations. We, as members, sign a document at the start of every year, which has you agree to these rules and regulations.”
The reigning Masters champion also pointed out that players who opted to join LIV Golf were aware of the potential consequences. “The people that made the option to go to LIV knew what they were,” McIlroy added. “So I don’t see what’s wrong with that.”
Unification of Golf Tours
Despite Brooks Koepka’s recent defection from the LIV tour back to the PGA Tour, McIlroy does not foresee a unified golf tour in the near future. “I would say that’s Solution A. It matters,” he said. “But I just don’t see a world where it can happen at this point. Just I don’t see a world where the two or three sides or whoever it is will give up enough. Like for reunification to happen, every side is going to feel like they will have lost, where you really want every side to feel like they have won. I think they are just too far apart for that to happen.”
As the golf world continues to navigate the complexities of the LIV Golf tour and the DP World Tour, McIlroy’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of loyalty, commitment, and adherence to rules and regulations in the sport. With the 2027 Ryder Cup on the horizon, the situation surrounding Rahm and Hatton’s fines remains a topic of interest, and their decision will likely have implications for their participation in the upcoming tournament.
