Athletics Acquire Jeff McNeil from Mets in Blockbuster Trade
The Oakland Athletics have made a significant move to bolster their lineup, acquiring utilityman Jeff McNeil from the New York Mets in a trade that marks the latest development in the Mets’ offseason roster overhaul. The Athletics will receive McNeil, a veteran presence with a proven track record, in exchange for minor-league right-hander Yordan Rodríguez and a substantial amount of cash to cover McNeil’s salary.
The Mets, who will send $5.75 million to the Athletics to help cover McNeil’s $15.75 million salary for the 2026 season, are also on the hook for McNeil’s $2 million buyout if the Athletics decline to exercise his $15.75 million club option for 2027. This move is part of a larger effort by the Mets to revamp their roster, having already traded away Edwin Diaz, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo this offseason.
McNeil’s Career and Versatility
McNeil, who turns 34 in April, has had a remarkable career since being drafted by the Mets in the 12th round in 2013. He made his major-league debut in 2018 and quickly established himself as a valuable contributor, winning the 2022 National League batting title and earning two All-Star selections. McNeil’s versatility has been a significant asset, as he has logged innings at five different positions plus designated hitter, providing a steady presence in the batter’s box and a reliable, if somewhat regressing, defender.
Despite his contributions, the Mets have decided that McNeil is not part of their plans for 2026, having acquired Marcus Semien to play second base and signed Jorge Polanco to play first base. With Brett Baty likely to start at third base and a trio of young players – Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, and Luisangel Acuna – rounding out the infield depth chart, McNeil became expendable. The Mets may now turn to Carson Benge, a highly touted prospect, or explore free agent options like Cody Bellinger to fill the void in left field.
Athletics’ Lineup and Expectations
In Oakland, McNeil is expected to play second base, lengthening a potent lineup that already features American League Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson, and Lawrence Butler. The Athletics, who finished 76-86 in 2025, are looking to improve their record and make a push for the playoffs. McNeil’s addition is a significant boost to their chances, and he is expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing a procedure to address thoracic outlet syndrome.
The Athletics gave up 17-year-old Yordan Rodríguez, who signed out of Cuba for $400,000 in January, to acquire McNeil. Rodríguez had a promising debut in the Dominican Summer League, posting a 2.93 ERA with 20 strikeouts to eight walks across 15 1/3 innings. While the loss of Rodríguez may be felt in the long term, the addition of McNeil is a clear win-now move for the Athletics.
As the offseason continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how the Mets and Athletics navigate their respective roster construction projects. One thing is certain, however: the acquisition of Jeff McNeil is a significant coup for the Athletics, and he will be a key player in their pursuit of success in 2026.
