New York Mets’ Offseason Moves: Impact on Edwin Diaz and Team Dynamics
The New York Mets’ recent signing of Devin Williams has sent ripples through the baseball world, particularly in relation to the team’s pursuit of All-Star closer Edwin Diaz. According to Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, the acquisition of Williams earlier this month played a significant role in the team’s decision-making process regarding Diaz, who ultimately agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Stearns acknowledged that the addition of Williams to the team changed the calculus in how they viewed their overall roster. “Once you add to a certain part of our team, that will change the calculus in how you look at your team in general,” he explained. While Stearns declined to comment directly on Diaz’s agreement with the Dodgers, citing that it was not yet official, he emphasized the impact of Williams’ signing on the team’s strategy.
Contract Details and Implications
The Mets signed Williams, 31, to a three-year, $51 million contract with $15 million in deferrals, reuniting him with Stearns, who previously served as the president of baseball operations for the Milwaukee Brewers. In contrast, Diaz, also 31, initially sought a five-year contract after opting out of his deal with the Mets but ultimately took a three-year, $69 million deal with deferrals from the Dodgers. The difference in payouts between Williams and Diaz was not as significant as expected, considering Diaz’s outstanding performance in 2025, which included a 1.63 ERA with 28 saves and his third All-Star nod.
Williams, who had an uneven 2025 season with the New York Yankees, producing a 4.79 ERA in 67 appearances, is expected to take over the closer role for the Mets. Stearns expressed confidence in Williams’ ability to excel in this position, citing his previous performances with the Brewers, where he emerged as one of the top relievers in the majors with a 1.83 ERA in six seasons. “I’ve certainly seen Devin perform at a very high level for a long time,” Stearns said. “I have full confidence that he can be one of the best relievers in baseball.”
Team Dynamics and Future Moves
The Mets have lost several key players this season, including outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who was traded to the Texas Rangers, and potentially Pete Alonso, who could depart via free agency. Stearns acknowledged the importance of maintaining continuity and keeping popular players, but emphasized the need to make decisions based on the team’s overall needs. “We’ve had those conversations throughout this offseason, and we had them throughout last offseason as well when we were faced with some decisions,” he explained.
The Mets remain in search of bullpen help, as well as a front-line starting pitcher and an outfielder. Despite the challenges, Stearns expressed optimism about the team’s offseason progress. “I’m very optimistic about where our offseason is headed,” he said. “Certainly, there’s work to do, but there are a lot of good players out there, and I’m confident that we’re really going to like where our team is once we get to Opening Day.”
As the Mets continue to navigate the offseason, fans will be watching closely to see how the team’s dynamics evolve and how the new additions, including Williams, contribute to their success. With a mix of experienced players and new talent, the Mets are poised to make a strong comeback in the upcoming season.
