As of Jan 20, 2026, 12:24 PM ET, the golf world has witnessed a significant development with the announcement that reigning NCAA men’s golf champion Michael La Sasso has decided to join LIV Golf. This move signifies La Sasso’s decision to forgo his senior season at Ole Miss and, consequently, forfeit his chance to participate in this year’s Masters.

LIV Golf made the official announcement on Tuesday, revealing that La Sasso has signed with the Phil Mickelson-led HyFlyers GC. The team referred to the former Ole Miss star as “one of golf’s promising young talents.” La Sasso expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “It’s a rare opportunity to learn from one of the greatest players in the history of the game, and I don’t take that lightly. LIV Golf allows me to compete at the highest level on a global stage, and I thrive in a team environment, especially one with the camaraderie and support that defines HyFlyers GC.”

Impact on La Sasso’s Amateur Status and Masters Invitation

By choosing to turn professional, La Sasso has forfeited his amateur status and, as a result, his invitation to the Masters, which he had earned as an exemption for being the NCAA individual champion. This decision underscores the significant implications of joining LIV Golf, particularly for young golfers who are navigating the transition from amateur to professional golf.

La Sasso’s Background and Achievements

La Sasso, who will turn 22 in March, has already demonstrated his prowess in the golf world. He was a first-team All-American last season at Ole Miss and played a crucial role in leading the Rebels to the semifinals of the NCAA team championship event. Additionally, he represented the United States in the 2025 Walker Cup, further highlighting his skills and potential in the sport.

Phil Mickelson, the leader of HyFlyers GC, praised La Sasso, saying, “Michael is one of the most exciting young players in the game today, bringing a competitive fire that’s evident every time he tees it up. He combines tremendous power and speed with an exceptional feel for the game. Beyond his talent, his personality, work ethic, and commitment to being a great teammate make him a terrific addition to HyFlyers GC.”

La Sasso’s Professional Experience and Upcoming LIV Season

La Sasso has already gained some experience in professional golf, having participated in six PGA Tour events last season. Although he missed the cut in five of those events, including the U.S. Open, he showed promise by finishing tied for 44th at the 3M Open, where he achieved 11 under par. La Sasso is the latest addition to LIV Golf, joining other newcomers such as Thomas Detry, Victor Perez, Laurie Canter, Byeong Hun An, and Elvis Smylie of Australia. The LIV season is set to commence in two weeks in Saudi Arabia, marking an exciting new chapter for La Sasso and the golf community.

The Associated Press contributed to this report, providing additional insights into La Sasso’s decision and its implications for his career and the world of golf.
