San Diego Padres Bring Back Familiar Faces in New Roles
The San Diego Padres have made some exciting additions to their organization, announcing the hiring of former manager Bud Black and longtime slugger Wil Myers in new roles. Black will serve as the team’s senior adviser to baseball operations, while Myers will take on the position of special assignment coach, focusing on player development.
Black’s return to the Padres marks a homecoming of sorts, as he previously managed the team for 8 1/2 seasons from 2007-2015. During his tenure, Black led the team to a 649-713 record, earning him the distinction of second-winningest manager in franchise history. Although the team never made the playoffs under his leadership, Black did win the National League Manager of the Year award in 2010. After leaving the Padres, Black went on to manage the Colorado Rockies from 2017 until his departure in May last year.
Myers, a veteran of eight seasons with the Padres, will bring his expertise to the team’s player development program. The 2013 American League Rookie of the Year had a successful stint with the team, batting.254 with 134 homers and 433 RBIs as an outfielder and corner infielder. Although he hasn’t played since suiting up for the Cincinnati Reds in 2023, Myers’ experience and knowledge will undoubtedly be valuable assets to the team’s young players.
A New Chapter for the Padres
The hiring of Black and Myers comes on the heels of the team’s recent managerial change, with Craig Stammen taking the reins after Mike Shildt’s retirement. As one of the few former pitchers to become a major league manager, Black’s unique perspective and expertise will be a welcome addition to the team’s front office. Meanwhile, Myers’ presence will provide a familiar face and a wealth of knowledge for the team’s up-and-coming players.
As the Padres look to build on their recent success, the additions of Black and Myers are a clear indication of the team’s commitment to excellence. With their combined experience and expertise, the team is poised to make a strong push in the upcoming season. Fans can expect to see a more cohesive and competitive team take the field, with Black and Myers playing key roles in shaping the team’s strategy and development.
