Texas Rangers Bolster Bullpen with Signing of Jakob Junis and Josh Sborz

The Texas Rangers have made significant moves to strengthen their bullpen, announcing the signing of right-handed reliever Jakob Junis on a one-year deal worth $4 million, as confirmed by a source to ESPN. This strategic acquisition aims to solidify the team’s relief pitching depth, a crucial aspect of their roster heading into the new season.

In addition to Junis, the Rangers also signed 2023 World Series reliever Josh Sborz to a minor league contract on the same day, further bolstering their bullpen options. These signings are part of a broader effort by the Rangers to revamp their relief corps, which has seen considerable turnover over the past two years.

Jakob Junis: A Strike-Throwing Specialist

Jakob Junis, 33, brings a valuable skillset to the Rangers, excelling at throwing strikes and limiting hard contact. His performance with the Cleveland Guardians last season was impressive, posting a 2.97 ERA in 57 appearances. He struck out 55 batters while issuing only 18 walks in 66 innings, showcasing his control and effectiveness in his first season working exclusively out of the bullpen.

Junis’s background as a starting pitcher with the Kansas City Royals means he is capable of pitching multiple innings, offering the Rangers flexibility in how they deploy him. Over his nine-year career, Junis has maintained a 4.36 ERA in 847 innings, with a notable ability to limit walks, having issued free passes to just six percent of the batters he has faced.

Strengthening the Rangers’ Bullpen

The signing of Junis is one of several moves designed to enhance the Rangers’ bullpen. He joins newcomers like Alex Diaz, Tyler Alexander, Carter Baumler, Zak Kent, and the returning Chris Martin, who also signed a one-year, $4 million deal. This influx of talent indicates the Rangers’ commitment to building a robust and reliable relief pitching unit.

According to The Athletic, which first reported Junis’ agreement with the Rangers, these moves reflect the team’s proactive approach to addressing areas of need. By adding depth and quality to their bullpen, the Rangers aim to improve their competitiveness and make a stronger push in the upcoming season.

The combination of Junis’s strike-throwing ability, Sborz’s World Series experience, and the other new additions positions the Rangers’ bullpen for potential success. As the team prepares for the new season, these signings are expected to play a significant role in their strategy to achieve better outcomes and make a lasting impact in the league.
