Dubai Invitational: Nacho Elvira Secures Third European Tour Title
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In a thrilling conclusion to the Dubai Invitational, Nacho Elvira emerged victorious, claiming his third title on the European tour. The 190th-ranked Elvira capitalized on the final-hole mishaps of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry to win by one shot on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Elvira’s stress-free par on the 18th hole sealed his victory, as he shot 69 to finish 10 under in the first tournament of 2026. This win marks a significant milestone for the 38-year-old Spaniard, who had begun the final round in the lead and held a three-shot advantage on 11 under after making birdie at No. 7.
A dramatic turn of events unfolded as Lowry, who had been in contention, found the greenside bunker from his approach on the 18th hole and then hit the water across the green from the sand, resulting in a double-bogey 6. This costly mistake dropped him to two strokes behind Elvira. McIlroy, who had been pushing for the lead, also faltered on the 18th, pushing his drive far right into the rough and ultimately failing to recover, leaving him tied for third place with Lowry.
Daniel Hillier of New Zealand secured second place with a score of 9 under, shooting an impressive 65. Elvira’s victory was met with jubilation as his wife and children rushed onto the green to celebrate with him. “It means the world,” Elvira said, overwhelmed with emotion. “You tell me on Tuesday I would be winning this, I’d never believe you. Anything that happens after this, nothing can compare.”
A Roller-Coaster Round
Elvira’s journey to victory was not without its challenges. After starting strong, he encountered back-to-back bogeys from No. 8, which threatened to derail his momentum. However, he managed to save par at the par-5 No. 10 after hitting into water off his second shot, keeping him in contention with Lowry, McIlroy, and other challengers.
As the tournament reached its climax, five players – Hillier, McIlroy, Lowry, Marcus Armitage, and Elvira – shared the lead at 9 under, setting the stage for a thrilling finale. Lowry briefly took the solo lead with a 30-footer for birdie at No. 15 but was unable to maintain his position.
McIlroy’s Charge
Rory McIlroy, the No. 2-ranked player, had been in contention throughout the tournament. Despite a strong run of five straight birdies from No. 9, which put him in a share of the lead, McIlroy’s charge was ultimately thwarted by a pair of errant shots on the 18th hole. “I wasn’t really focused on winning the tournament,” McIlroy reflected. “I was just trying to piece it together and make some good swings and try to hit a few more fairways, which I did for the most part.”
As the European tour moves forward, players will have little time to reflect on their performance, with the next event, the Dubai Desert Classic, scheduled to take place at Emirates Golf Club starting Thursday, just a short drive up the coast from the Dubai Invitational.
