Aryna Sabalenka Advances to Brisbane International Final
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka has advanced to the Brisbane International final for the third year in a row after a 6-3, 6-4 win Saturday over Karolina Muchová. The match, which took place at Pat Rafter Arena, saw Sabalenka clinch the semifinal on her fourth match point, securing her spot in Sunday’s final against Marta Kostyuk.
Sabalenka’s victory was marked by a strong performance, with 32 winners and all four break points saved. Despite a late flurry of pressure from Muchová, Sabalenka sealed the win when a Muchová shot sailed long. “I always try to stay in the present,” Sabalenka said in a post-match interview. “I worked really hard and each match against her is just another opportunity to get the win, and I’m super happy that today was the day when I was able to get the win. She is such a great player, and I always enjoy battles against her.”
Marta Kostyuk’s Impressive Win
Marta Kostyuk, Sabalenka’s opponent in the final, recorded her third win in a row over a top-10 opponent, beating fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-3. Kostyuk came into the match with only one win in five previous matches against Pegula, making her victory all the more impressive. The win sets up an exciting final match between Kostyuk and Sabalenka, with both players looking to take home the title.
On Friday, Sabalenka broke Madison Keys in five straight service games on the way to a 6-3, 6-3 win, in a rematch of last year’s Australian Open final. Last year at Melbourne Park, Keys beat Sabalenka for her first Grand Slam singles title. The Brisbane International is a tuneup event for this year’s Australian Open, which begins Jan. 18.
Men’s Tournament Update
In the men’s tournament at Brisbane, Brandon Nakashima beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 7-6 (4), 6-4 in an all-American semifinal. Nakashima will play top-seeded Daniil Medvedev after the Russian beat American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-2. The former No. 1-ranked Medvedev is seeking his 22nd career title, while it will be Nakashima’s first ATP Tour final in four years. The 24-year-old American has not lost a set this week.
“We’re really good friends,” Nakashima said of Kovacevic. “We have been practicing a lot the last month or so, and it’s great to see him playing well at these kind of tournaments. It was a super tough match, right from the beginning.” The match between Nakashima and Medvedev promises to be an exciting one, with both players looking to take home the title.
The Brisbane International has seen some exciting matches so far, with top players competing for the title. With the Australian Open just around the corner, the tournament serves as an important warm-up event for players looking to fine-tune their skills before the first Grand Slam of the year. As the final matches approach, fans can expect some thrilling tennis action from the world’s top players.
