Naomi Osaka Struggles with Illness at United Cup

Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka is not feeling her best at the United Cup in Perth, Australia. After losing her first match to Greece’s Maria Sakkari on Friday, Osaka revealed that she has been dealing with health issues over the holiday period. The Japanese tennis star said she got “really sick” and wasn’t operating at 100% during the 6-4, 6-2 loss.

Osaka was visibly unwell during the match, coughing at times and appearing to lack energy. She believes she likely caught the illness from her 2-year-old daughter, Shai. “I have been dealing with some health stuff, so I’m kind of just happy to be out here right now,” Osaka said in a post-match interview. “It’s not serious, but I’m not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at, which kind of sucks, because I had a really good offseason so I thought I was going to do really well here.”

Despite her illness, Osaka is hopeful that she will be back to full strength soon. “I’m at the tail end of that but still not amazing,” she said. “I’m just trying to get better every day. I had a cough, a runny nose, like all that nasty stuff, so hopefully it goes away before the Australian Open.” The first Grand Slam event of the year is set to start in Melbourne on January 18.

Impact on Upcoming Tournaments

The Australian Open is just around the corner, and Osaka’s health will be a key factor in her performance. As a four-time Grand Slam champion, she is expected to be a strong contender for the title. However, her current illness may affect her preparation and training. According to Australian Open officials, the tournament will feature a strong field of competitors, including top-ranked players from around the world.

In other news from the United Cup, Stefanos Tsitsipas wrapped up victory for Greece over Japan with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Shintaro Mochizuki. The Greek tennis star’s win secured a crucial point for his team and highlighted his strong form heading into the new season.
