Barcelona Eyes Pau Torres to Bolster Defense
As the winter transfer window approaches, Barcelona is reportedly eyeing Aston Villa defender Pau Torres to strengthen their defense. According to sources close to the club, the Catalan giants have made signing a left-sided centre-back a top priority for next summer. This move comes after the departure of Iñigo Martínez to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr earlier this year, which left a significant gap in the team’s backline.
Currently, Barcelona has Pau Cubarsí, Ronald Araújo, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen as options to play in the middle of the defense. However, coach Hansi Flick has struggled to find a consistent pairing this season, which has led to some experimentation with different players in the position. In recent weeks, with Araújo taking a mental health break and García playing in midfield, Flick has even used left-back Gerard Martín as a centre-back to utilize his left foot and improve the team’s ability to play out from the back.
Barcelona’s interest in Pau Torres is not new, as the club had considered signing him when he was at Villarreal. However, he eventually joined Aston Villa in 2023 in a deal worth around €40 million ($47m). Torres’ contract with Villa runs until 2028, but sources suggest that he would be open to a return to Spain if Barcelona makes a serious offer. The Spanish defender’s ability on the ball and in the air makes him an attractive option for the Catalan club.
Alternative Options
While Pau Torres is a top target for Barcelona, the club is also considering other options to strengthen their defense. One such player is Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck, whom the club has been following since his breakthrough at SC Freiburg. The Germany international has a contract until 2027 with Dortmund, but his future is uncertain, and several big European clubs are monitoring his situation.
Any move Barcelona makes will depend on their financial situation, as the club strives to comply with LaLiga’s financial fair play regulations. The departures of big earners like Andreas Christensen and Robert Lewandowski, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, could free up space for new signings. However, no final decision has been made on their futures, and the club will need to carefully manage their finances to make any significant transfers.
As the transfer window approaches, Barcelona’s pursuit of a new centre-back will be closely watched. With the club’s defense conceding 31 goals in 23 games in all competitions this season, the need for reinforcement is clear. Whether it’s Pau Torres or another player, the Catalan giants will be looking to make a statement in the transfer market to bolster their chances of success in the coming season.
