Record-Breaking Performance at the Grant Thornton Invitational
The Grant Thornton Invitational is underway at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, and the competition is heating up. On Friday, Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark, along with Charley Hull and Michael Brennan, shared the lead with a record-breaking score of 17-under 55 in the scramble format. This impressive performance shattered the previous record by one stroke, showcasing the exceptional skills of these golfers.
According to PGA Tour reports, the ideal scoring conditions at Tiburon Golf Club, combined with the scramble format, allowed the teams to make the most of their opportunities. Brennan, who started the year on the PGA Tour of Americas and won the Bank of Utah Championship on an exemption, was filling in for Daniel Berger. He and Hull had an incredible streak, making birdies or eagles on 13 consecutive holes, with the only exceptions being pars on the 16th and 18th holes.
A Surprising Turn of Events for Charley Hull
In a surprising turn of events, Hull revealed that she had been working on changing her swing just last week and was initially nervous about her performance. “It’s quite funny because actually I was changing my swing last week and I come on Tuesday and I could not even keep the ball on the planet. So I was actually pretty nervous today,” Hull said in a post-game interview. “Actually, it worked out pretty well.” Her partnership with Brennan proved to be a winning combination, and their chemistry on the course was evident in their impressive score.
Thompson and Clark also had a remarkable run, making birdies or eagles on nine of the last 10 holes, with the only exception being the par-3 16th. Clark attributed their success to their similar playing styles, stating, “I feel like we kind of have similar games. She hits it really far off the tee, and if one of us is in play, we’re significantly past kind of the competitors and we have our advantage there.” This strategic partnership allowed them to capitalize on their strengths and secure their spot at the top of the leaderboard.
A Shift in Format for the Remaining Rounds
The format of the tournament will shift to foursomes for Saturday, which is considered the most challenging format as only one golf ball is in play, and players alternate hitting shots. The final round on Sunday will feature a modified fourballs format. With a two-shot lead over Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak, Thompson and Clark, as well as Hull and Brennan, are in a strong position to take the top spot. However, other teams, such as Rose Zhang and Michael Kim, Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy, and Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup, are still within striking distance, making for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
Defending champions Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit are also in the running, having carded a 59 and sitting four shots behind the leaders. As the competition heats up, golf fans can expect to see some thrilling performances from these talented athletes. With the stage set for a dramatic finish, the Grant Thornton Invitational is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience for players and spectators alike.
