Callum Walsh Remains Undefeated with Unanimous Decision Over Carlos Ocampo

LAS VEGAS — In a highly anticipated main event, undefeated Callum Walsh secured a unanimous decision victory over Carlos Ocampo at the newly renovated Meta Apex on Friday night, marking a successful inaugural event for Zuffa Boxing. The judges scored the bout 98-90, 98-90, and 97-91 in favor of Walsh, who demonstrated his skill and determination throughout the fight.

Walsh (16-0, 11 KOs) effectively initiated and finished exchanges with Ocampo, landing a series of powerful lunging left hands that left a lasting impact. As he reflected on his performance, Walsh stated, “I rise to the occasion. I take every opportunity given to me, and yeah, a hundred percent the better opponent will bring a better Callum Walsh. I’m up for anything.” This mentality has been a driving force behind his success, with many considering him a rising star in the boxing world.

The fight saw both Walsh and Ocampo engage in a fierce battle, with each taking turns lunging forward with powerful punches. However, Walsh’s cleaner punches and ability to capitalize on openings gave him a significant advantage. Despite Ocampo’s efforts, he was unable to counter effectively, allowing Walsh to dominate the fight. As noted by boxing experts, Walsh’s performance demonstrated his growing skill and experience in the ring.

A notable moment in the fight came in the sixth round when the referee ruled that Walsh was knocked down, a call that many considered questionable. The blow to Walsh’s shoulder knocked him off balance, causing his glove to touch the canvas. Additionally, Ocampo was docked for a low blow in the ninth round, further highlighting the intense and physical nature of the fight.

Ocampo (38-4, 26 KOs), fighting out of Ensenada, Mexico, has faced challenges in the past when stepping up in competition, including losses to Tim Tszyu, Sebastian Fundora, and Errol Spence Jr. Since his loss to Tszyu in 2023, Ocampo had secured three consecutive knockout wins, albeit against lesser opposition in Mexico, before facing Walsh. This fight marked a significant test for Ocampo, and while he showed determination, he ultimately fell short against the undefeated Walsh.

Walsh’s Performance and Future Prospects

Walsh, 24, has been gaining recognition in the boxing world, with many of his fights featured on UFC Fight Pass before he formally signed with Zuffa Boxing. His recent performance against Ocampo has further solidified his position as a rising star. Reflecting on his fight, Walsh stated, “I feel like I’ve improved since the last fight. Cardio-wise, I felt a lot better. I’m never happy with the performance unless I knock him out. I feel like getting the 10 rounds is good. The opponents are getting tougher and tougher. [Ocampo has] been in there with the best of them. It was a good experience. It was a good night all round. I’m happy to get the win.”

The event marked a significant milestone for Zuffa Boxing, the newly launched boxing promotion from the UFC’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, in partnership with Sela Sport and backed by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia. The fight took place the night before UFC 324, which was held a few miles away at T-Mobile Arena, and was attended by UFC fighters, boxers, and WWE superstars, highlighting the growing intersection of combat sports.

As the boxing world continues to evolve, fighters like Callum Walsh are at the forefront, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the ring. With his undefeated record and growing reputation, Walsh is certainly one to watch in the coming years.
