Islam Makhachev’s Next Title Defense: Will Kamaru Usman Get the Nod?

Since Islam Makhachev’s victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322, which earned him the undisputed UFC welterweight title, there has been considerable speculation about his first title defense. Among the potential opponents, Kamaru Usman’s name has been frequently mentioned, with some arguing that the former champion deserves a shot at reclaiming his title. However, not everyone agrees, and other contenders like Jorge Masvidal and Henry Cejudo have also been suggested as potential opponents.

Makhachev himself has expressed a great deal of respect for Usman, considering him one of the toughest challenges in the welterweight division. The Russian fighter believes that Usman possesses the skills to beat any top contender at 170 pounds, even at the age of 38. This level of admiration from the current champion adds weight to the argument for Usman to be next in line for a title shot.

Planned Fight in January 2026

In a recent interview with Ushatayka, Makhachev revealed that he was offered a fight in January 2026 but turned it down due to the short notice. Having just finished his training camp for UFC 322, Makhachev felt that he needed more time to prepare for his next bout. He stated, “I was offered a fight in January. I think January is an impossible date because I had already been in camp for 3 months, and they called me in December. They were like, ‘You’ll be fighting in January.’ I said it was already too late. I needed to leave for camp and be ready for January. I told them I definitely won’t fight in January. I think it will be after Ramadan for sure.”

When asked if the proposed January fight was against Kamaru Usman, Makhachev indicated that he didn’t think so, suggesting instead that the opponent might have been Michael Morales. Makhachev clarified that he wasn’t told the name of his potential opponent but based on the timing and circumstances, he doubted it was Usman.

Implications for Kamaru Usman and the Welterweight Division

Makhachev’s comments suggest that the UFC may not be granting Kamaru Usman a title shot next, despite his reputation as a formidable contender. Usman has had a mixed record lately, with only one win in his last four fights. Meanwhile, other fighters like Carlos Prates, Michael Morales, and Ian Machado Garry have been active and have made strong cases for themselves to be considered for the title.

As the welterweight division continues to evolve, Makhachev’s first title defense is highly anticipated. The champion has expressed his desire to return to the octagon after Ramadan in 2026, potentially setting the stage for a significant bout in the spring or early summer. With several contenders vying for a shot at the title, the decision on Makhachev’s next opponent will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.

For now, the speculation surrounding Makhachev’s next fight continues, with Kamaru Usman’s future in the title picture hanging in the balance. As the UFC navigates the complex landscape of its welterweight division, one thing is certain: Islam Makhachev’s first title defense will be a pivotal moment in the career of the current champion and the trajectory of the division as a whole.
