Introducing TGL: The Revolutionary Golf League Founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, two of the biggest names in golf, have joined forces to bring fans a new and exciting experience: TGL, a tech-infused golf league that promises to change the way we watch and engage with the sport. Launched in August 2022, TGL is a 3-on-3 golf league that features six teams composed of four PGA Tour golfers competing in two-hour matches inside a custom-built arena, SoFi Center, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The name TGL stands for Tomorrow’s Golf League, which is derived from TMRW Sports, the company founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. TMRW Sports aims to produce technology-based ventures in the world of sports and entertainment, and TGL is its flagship project. As McIlroy explained in an interview, “We want to bring golf to a new audience and make it more accessible and engaging for fans” (Source: ESPN).
How TGL Works
A TGL match consists of two sessions. The first session is a nine-hole, 3-on-3, alternate-shot format, while the second session is a six-hole, head-to-head format, where each golfer plays two holes. The course within SoFi Center is equipped with various technologies, including a giant simulation screen, real grass tee boxes, fairway surfaces, rough, and sand. The tech-infused green features jacks that change the slope to create a variety of play on every TGL hole.
Each hole is worth one point, and if the two teams are tied at the end of regulation, an overtime period determines the winner. The overtime period is similar to a penalty shootout in soccer, where golfers compete head-to-head until a team successfully hits two shots closer to the pin than its competitors. A shot clock is also featured in each match, with a countdown of 40 seconds, based on the USGA’s recommendation on pace of play.
TGL Teams and Schedule
Six teams represent six cities in the season-long competition: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and The Bay Golf Club. Each team has four PGA Tour golfers, including notable players such as Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Billy Horschel, and Justin Thomas. The second TGL season tees off on December 28, with a schedule that complements the PGA Tour schedule.
The TGL schedule includes matches on December 28, January 2, January 6, and so on, with all matches available on either ESPN or ESPN2 and on the ESPN App. Fans can catch all the action in the official streaming hub and check out the ESPN golf hub page for breaking news, features, rankings, scores, schedules, and more.
Watching TGL Golf
Fans can watch TGL golf on ESPN, ESPN2, or on the ESPN App. The official streaming hub provides access to all matches, and the ESPN golf hub page offers additional content, including news, features, and scores. As Woods stated, “We’re excited to bring this new format to golf fans and provide an immersive experience that’s unlike anything else in the sport” (Source: PGA Tour).
In conclusion, TGL is an innovative golf league that promises to revolutionize the way we watch and engage with golf. With its tech-infused format, custom-built arena, and talented teams, TGL is an exciting development for golf fans and a testament to the vision of its founders, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
