Manchester United Boosts Attack with Lea Schüller Signing
Manchester United have made a significant move to strengthen their attack with the signing of German forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old striker has joined the Red Devils on a 3½ year contract for an undisclosed fee, bringing an impressive goal-scoring record to the Women’s Super League (WSL) team.
Schüller’s arrival is a major coup for Manchester United, who have been steadily building their squad since gaining promotion to the WSL in the 2019-20 season. The club has added notable players like Jess Park and Fridolina Rolfö in recent times, and Schüller’s signing is a testament to their ambition to compete at the highest level.
Position and Style of Play
Schüller is a central striker who excels at finding space behind the defense and inside the box. Her movement and acceleration allow her to get into one-vs.-one situations with the goalkeeper, where she can finish with ease. She is also adept at attacking incoming crosses and can be classified as a “fox-in-the-box” style of striker.
According to data from the Frauen Bundesliga, Schüller has scored 10+ goals in each of the last seven seasons, demonstrating her consistency in front of goal. Her ability to score from a variety of finishes and her high expected goal (xG) value make her a valuable addition to Manchester United’s attack.
Strengths and Areas for Improvement
Schüller’s strengths lie in her goal-scoring ability, spatial awareness, and timing of her runs in and around the penalty area. She has a tremendous leap that allows her to take control in the air and direct her efforts well. Since the 2023-24 season, only VfL Wolfsburg striker Alexandra Popp has more headed shots (67 vs. 39) and only Bayern midfielder Pernille Harder has more headed goals (11 vs. 8) in the Frauen Bundesliga than Schüller.
However, Schüller’s focus on optimizing her shot quality by getting into good positions prior to shooting leaves room for improvement in other areas. Her average shot distance over the last four seasons hovers around the penalty spot (12 yards), highlighting the specific area she is most active in. It will be interesting to see how she pairs up with a player of a similar profile at United in Elisabeth Terland.
How Schüller Will Fit at Manchester United
With Schüller’s arrival, Manchester United are faced with a problem of profile overlaps. In Marc Skinner’s system, the central striker is often provided service by the wingers and isn’t expected to be as heavily involved in the build-up phases. While this means Schüller is a perfect fit in theory, what she offers is eerily similar to United’s current option: Terland.
Although there are similarities in their style of play, Schüller has an edge in terms of her aerial prowess, speed, and experience. While Terland’s aerial duel success rate hovers around the 40% mark, Schüller hasn’t posted a rate below 50% in the last four seasons. Transitioning from the Frauen Bundesliga to WSL will force her to face slightly more rigid low blocks, but her quality should shine through, and she can provide a reliable and similar alternative for United’s system.
Schüller’s arrival will also complement the fluid style of play of Manchester United’s wide players, Melvine Malard and Park, who like to cut inside and create opportunities in behind the defense. Her incisive runs in behind without getting caught offside too much will add another dimension to United’s attack, and as the team’s ambitions continue to grow, Schüller could provide the right impetus and depth to reach their targets.
