Minnesota Wild’s Jonas Brodin Undergoes Surgery, to Miss Olympics
Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin has undergone surgery for a lingering lower-body injury, which will prevent him from playing for Sweden in the upcoming Olympics, according to coach John Hynes. The news was announced on January 22, 2026, as the Wild hosted the Detroit Red Wings.
Brodin has been out for the fifth straight game and also missed four games in December due to the injury. While Hynes did not provide a specific timetable for Brodin’s return, he assured that the 14th-year veteran will be back on the ice this season. “He got it done at a good time,” Hynes said. “He will be back, for sure, with more than enough time in the season.”
Wild Dealing with Injuries Ahead of Olympic Break
The Wild are currently dealing with several injuries, all of which are unspecified lower-body injuries. Leading goal scorer Matt Boldy has been sidelined for a fourth consecutive game, while defenseman Zach Bogosian has been out for the ninth game in a row. However, center Joel Eriksson Ek and forward Marcus Johansson are on track to return to the lineup after absences of six games and three games, respectively.
Despite Brodin’s absence, the Wild will still have representation at the Winter Games in Italy, with Eriksson Ek and goalies Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt set to play for Sweden. Additionally, Boldy and defensemen Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes will be part of the U.S. team.
According to NHL.com, the Olympic break is scheduled to take place from February 8-25, 2026. The Wild will look to get healthy and regroup during this time, with the aim of making a strong push for the playoffs in the second half of the season.
