Will Power Seeks Redemption with Andretti Global After Acrimonious Split with Team Penske
As the 2026 IndyCar season approaches, Will Power is more determined than ever to prove himself as a top contender. After a tumultuous split with Team Penske, Power has joined Andretti Global, and he’s eager to make his former team regret letting him go. The 44-year-old driver, who will turn 45 on the day the IndyCar season opens on March 1 in St. Petersburg, Florida, has been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming season.
Power’s departure from Team Penske was a long time coming, with the team opting to replace him with 24-year-old David Malukas. The transition was over a year in the making, but a lack of transparency left Power in limbo for most of the 2025 IndyCar season. Despite his impressive resume, which includes 71 poles and 71 wins, including one Indianapolis 500, Power’s age and the team’s desire for younger talent led to his ousting.
Power has been open about the difficulties he faced during his final months with Team Penske, citing a lack of communication and a sense of animosity from his former team. He’s now focused on using that experience as motivation to drive success with Andretti Global. “There’s nothing more I want to do this year than beat Penske every single weekend,” Power said. “I understand why I wasn’t allowed to start at Andretti until now, but we’re already working very, very hard on everything we need to get to work on.”
A New Chapter with Andretti Global
Power’s move to Andretti Global marks a new chapter in his career, and he’s excited to bring his experience and expertise to the team. Andretti Global, now owned by TWG Motorsports and Dan Towriss, is eager to return to the top of IndyCar, and Power’s veteran leadership will be instrumental in achieving that goal. The team has also snagged Ron Ruzewski, one of three Team Penske executives fired during an Indianapolis 500 cheating scandal, as its team principal for IndyCar.
Ruzewski and Power’s knowledge of Team Penske will be invaluable to Andretti Global, and they’re already working closely together to prepare for the season. Power’s first act as a member of the team was to request a meeting with his teammates, Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood, and the Andretti leadership to discuss priorities and debrief his first session in his new Honda. “Will is one of the nicest, greatest guys in the series and one of the most pure competitors in IndyCar,” Kirkwood said. “He’s already been great for us in just a few weeks. He works day in and day out to make sure he’s one of the most competitive drivers in the series, and that’s a drive I think we all hope to have.”
Power has secured a townhome in Indiana to be close to the race team and has spent time in the Honda simulator to get accustomed to his new car. He’s also participating in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, an event he’s always wanted to compete in but was rarely allowed to by Team Penske. Although he’s excited to be a part of the prestigious endurance race, he’s aware that it’s taking time away from his preparations with Andretti Global.
A Season of Redemption
The rest of the IndyCar field is eager to see what Power will deliver this season, and many believe he’s never been more motivated. “He’s going to be very fast, very good, especially on road and street courses,” former Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin said. “I know what Will’s like, and he’s very regimented in terms of what he likes and how he likes things and what he can offer to Andretti. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on the pole at St. Pete.”
Towriss, the owner of Andretti Global, is confident that Power will be a valuable asset to the team. “He’s coming in with an insane work ethic,” Towriss said. “He thinks about racing all the time. We want to win, and if you want to just have a job or just work at a race team, then go somewhere else. Come here with us because you want to be part of something and build something special. We know we got that in Will Power.”
As the 2026 IndyCar season gets underway, all eyes will be on Will Power and Andretti Global. With his experience, expertise, and determination, Power is poised to make a strong statement and prove that he’s still a force to be reckoned with in the world of IndyCar.
