Dakar Rally 2026: Luciano Benavides Wins Motorbike Title by Slimmest Margin in History

The 2026 Dakar Rally came to a thrilling conclusion on January 17, 2026, with Luciano Benavides emerging as the surprise winner of the motorbike title. The Argentine rider capitalized on a navigation error by Ricky Brabec, who was leading the race, to claim the top spot by a mere two seconds – the smallest margin in the history of the Dakar Rally.

Benavides’ victory was nothing short of remarkable, considering he was never in the lead until the final stage. Brabec, who was riding for Honda, had built a significant lead and seemed poised to take his third Dakar title. However, a wrong turn just seven kilometers from the finish line proved costly, allowing Benavides to seize the opportunity and take the win.

“I saw the opportunity, and I took it,” Benavides said in a post-race interview. “I felt ready all day. I told everyone at the start of the stage ‘This Dakar is for me.'” Benavides’ team was overjoyed, lifting him onto their shoulders and chanting “Lu-chan-oh, Lu-chan-oh” as he celebrated his maiden Dakar victory.

The previous closest margin in the Dakar Rally was 43 seconds, achieved by Luciano’s older brother Kevin in 2023. This year’s win was even more impressive, given that Benavides started the final stage over three minutes behind Brabec. The Argentine rider’s KTM was faster in real time, but Brabec’s Honda was collecting time bonuses for opening the way and extending his overnight lead.

Nasser Al-Attiyah Claims Sixth Car Title

Nasser Al-Attiyah secured his sixth car title, and first for Dacia, with a cautious final drive. The Qatari driver, along with his Belgian navigator Fabian Lurquin, made the decisive move on Wednesday, regaining the lead by 12 minutes in the second half of a marathon stage. Al-Attiyah ultimately beat Nani Roma by 9:42, the lowest margin of his six victories.

Al-Attiyah has won for four different manufacturers, including his first win in 2011 and 2015 in Argentina, 2019 in Peru, and 2022, 2023, and this year in Saudi Arabia. The Qatari driver is now just two titles behind the record held by former teammate Stéphane Peterhansel.

“I still need to beat Peterhansel’s record,” Al-Attiyah said, already looking ahead to his next challenge. Al-Attiyah and Lurquin, who made their Dakar debut in 2004, have come a long way since their first outing, and their partnership has yielded impressive results.

A Thrilling Conclusion to the 2026 Dakar Rally

The 2026 Dakar Rally will be remembered for its nail-biting conclusion, with the motorbike and car titles decided in the final stages. The event, which covered over 8,000 kilometers of challenging terrain, pushed competitors to their limits. Benavides’ win marked a significant upset, while Al-Attiyah’s sixth title cemented his status as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the Dakar Rally.

The 2026 Dakar Rally has set the stage for an exciting future, with new talent emerging and seasoned competitors continuing to push the boundaries of endurance and skill. As the dust settles on this year’s event, fans and competitors alike are already looking forward to the next edition of the world’s most iconic rally raid.
