Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur Reflects on Lewis Hamilton’s Challenging First Season

Hamilton’s transition from Mercedes to Ferrari was highly anticipated, but he failed to secure a single podium finish throughout the season. Moreover, he was outqualified by his teammate Charles Leclerc 19 times, highlighting the significant challenges he faced. Vasseur noted that Hamilton often missed out on qualifying spots by small margins, but the cumulative effect of these minor setbacks had a substantial impact on his overall performance.

Underestimating the Challenge

Vasseur admitted that he personally underestimated the magnitude of the challenge Hamilton faced in adapting to the new team. He emphasized that the differences between Mercedes and Ferrari are not just superficial, but rather a result of distinct approaches to every aspect of the team, from software to personnel. This cultural and technical shift required Hamilton to adjust to a new environment, which proved more difficult than anticipated.

Vasseur highlighted the importance of attention to detail, citing the example of Abu Dhabi’s Q2 session, where a single tenth of a second separated fifth and 15th place. He acknowledged that the team and Hamilton need to improve across the board, focusing on collaboration, understanding, and fine-tuning every aspect of their performance.

A Path Forward

Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Vasseur is optimistic that small improvements in various areas will collectively make a significant difference. He believes that as Hamilton and the team gain a better understanding of each other, they will be able to optimize their performance. This process will involve refining their collaboration, adapting to the car’s characteristics, and addressing the minor issues that accumulated throughout the season.

Vasseur’s reflections on the 2025 season serve as a valuable lesson in the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail in the high-stakes world of Formula 1. As Ferrari and Hamilton look to bounce back in 2026, their ability to learn from past challenges and work together will be crucial in their pursuit of success.
